was just expecting more. >> reporter: fans did get free passes to the 49ers museum for their trouble. the grass was chosen four drought resistance and superior durability. >> hybrid bermudas tend to be mowed tightly so they become very fast. athletes can be quick on them. >> reporter: the team said then that they wanted the grass in nine weeks before the first game so it would set. but the new turf being laid down now will only have three days to set before the chargers game. fans are worried this could lead to even more problems for the team. >> i do not want my team being injured by grass. >> reporter: and that obviously is the big concern for the 49ers and also for the san diego chargers who will be coming in here to levi's stadium for that game on sunday. that grass was just laid in today. but i'm told by industry experts that it really doesn't take that long for grass to set because they do it on such big heavy rolls that it is very tough when they get it in there

so we'll have to see what happens on sunday. as for the grass that they have here allen, one of the reasons they went with this grass is because they are going to use a sand base. that's also a base that's helpful for people trying to save water. we're in a drought in northern california and that's one of the reasons why they chose that grass. at 6:00, we'll have more on that plus we'll talk to an expert who talks about, you know, the upsides and the downsides of using a very sandy base. >> well, and i think fans and players would rather play on real grass not the fake stuff. >> reporter: yeah. they say that there's injuries more -- more prone to injuries if they use artificial turf. the women's u.s. soccer team is considering boycotting the women's world cup because that will be played on artificial turf. they like to play on natural grass. it's more forgiving but it also can have some problems as we'v seen. >> thank you. questions being raised about a new video showing a bay

area deputy punching a man. take a look at this. the cell phone video shows the deputy landing two punches while trying to restrain a man already on the ground. it was captured on video last saturday. the sheriff's department is aware of the video. a spokesman says the punches were, quote, distraction jabs used to get people to stop what they're doing. the cotati man was booked for public drunkenness and resisting arrest. a short video clip could be an important clue in the beating death of a san francisco man. this dashcam video from a passing cab shows a man in a hoodie near where bryan higgins was attacked on august 10. police are releasing this brief video and are studying other surveillance video of the assault. no arrests so far. higgins was taken off life support and died three days after the beating. raw emotion outside a san francisco courtroom in a deadly

hit-and-run case. >> awful. awful. [ indiscernible ] >> no way to describe how i felt. >> a family dealing with the death of their 2-year-old is now fighting to free the toddler's aunt who has been charged in the case. kpix 5's veronica de la cruz has details from the newsroom. >> reporter: allen, the aunt's arrest came as a surprise in this case. she was the one caring for her niece as you know. but police have said she had negligent and partly to blame for the death. 25-year-old lorysha gage appeared distraught in corporate. she was arraigned for felony child endangerment charges. gage was crossing the street with the 2-year-old niece when the toddler was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver. last friday night, gage had taken her niece and her twin brother to a movie. police say they were crossing mission street against the light. what's more, gage is accused of leaving myana in the street to go back for her brother. in those few seconds, the girl was hit and the driver sped off. grieving family members say it was a terrible accident and

gage does not deserve to be behind bars. >> she is not [ indiscernible ] [ loud background noise ] >> the tragedy here is that they put her in jail and locked her up when there's an outstanding person who was driving the vehicle who failed to tap the brake pedal and stop. >> reporter: the mother doesn't blame her sister for the toddler's death and says her arrest is not justice. police are still looking for the driver who is responsible. bail was set at $50,000. the funeral for the 2-year-old is scheduled for sunday. developing news in marin county, police are dealing with the discovery of not one two bodies. ryan takeo is live near mill valley where police are trying to find a link between the two. ryan. >> reporter: liz, there have been police deputies -- rather,

marin county sheriff's deputies here all day and there's a mystery here on carlotta circle. police found one body here last night. then this morning, another right next door. the only thing police are sure of right now, at least one of them was murdered. >> we don't know what we have. this is definitely a homicide involving two people. >> reporter: the police investigation started last night on carlotta circle. a family came home to find their loved one, a 61-year-old man, dead in the backyard. this morning, when police started looking for clues from neighbors, they found another man dead right next door. >> i was woken up this morning at 7:45 by three sheriffs. >> reporter: a wake-up call for lynn. her neighborhood near mill valley has always been a sleepy suburb. >> absolutely shocking because it's normally really quiet and it's, uhm, really scary and upsetting. >> not really the kind of thing that i would expect in mill valley. >> reporter: this man doing landscaping work down the street says he heard a gunshot at about 1:00 yesterday.

>> didn't hear anything really after that. no like cars peeling out or anything like that. >> what is this? is this a murder-suicide, homicide? there are so many variables, it's too early to tell. >> reporter: we may have an idea where the investigation is heading. chopper 5 capturing an image we cannot show you. what looks like a shotgun between the legs of one man's body. and investigators say the neighborhood should not worry about a suspect. >> we haven't identified anything at this point that would show any cause for any fear by people in the neighborhood. if there was any type of concern that i needed to express to the community, i would in fact share that. i don't recognize that at this point. >> reporter: other neighbors say the man found yesterday lives at the house. and the man found this morning with the gun nearby, neighbors say he was watching the house while his parents were on vacation. live near mill valley, i'm ryan takeo, kpix 5. hayward police still haven't determined why a man fell off an overpass on to

interstate 880 early yesterday. he fell into traffic and was killed. police say that there are conflicting accounts of what happened. investigators have not ruled out a homicide or a suicide. they are asking anyone with information to call them. the defense department confirms and defends its effort to rescue americans in syria including photojournalist james foley. and as we now know, that rescue failed. special forces hit the ground in northern syria earlier this summer trying to rescue four american hostages. they believe that isis militants were holding those hostages at an oil refinery. but when they got there, the hostages were not there. >> isil is a sophisticated and well funded -- as any group that we have seen -- they're beyond just a terrorist group. >> isis posted a video tuesday of foley's beheading and threatened to kill another journalist. counter-terrorism experts say

the busy intersection of ma and van ness. san francisco police are looking for witnesses to a carjacking near the busy intersection of market and van ness. a driver says three men put a gun to his head and stole his red buick sedan just after 9:00 this morning. the suspects tossed drugs, cash and gun from the car as police

chased through the tenderloin. it ended near howard and 7th when the trio bailed out and got away on foot. san jose police have arrested this man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident on sunday night. the 25-year-old from san jose turned himself in to police yesterday. he is accused of running over and killing 53-year-old [ non- english language ] , who was crossing the street. the collision happened at the intersection of center road and balfour drive. it was the first of two hit-and- runs in two days on the same stretch of road. california's drought worsens and now one santa clara county supervisor is targeting his own employees, asking for more water cuts. >> faulty ignition switches, airbags that don't deploy and a lot of recalls. many drivers just don't know about them. tonight the simple way to check the recall list. ,,,,

behind by passengers going from electronics to dentures, can you imagine? those are just a little sampling of the stuff left behind by passengers going through security at sfo. kpix 5's john ramos got a look at sfo's lost and found. we were surprised by the number of lost laptops. reporter: there's something

about the bustle and confusion of an airport that can turn a normal person's brain to mush. and when that happens, something's bound to get lost in transit. >> laptops, cell phones, passports, driver's licenses, strollers and full pieces of packed carry-on luggage, passengers just leave them here. >> reporter: this is just 10 days' worth of items left behind at sfo's security screening areas. most common are belts and eyeglasses but there are also valuable items like car keys and jewelry. >> a pair of sunglasses is easily replaceable. the thing that i question are the laptops and the expensive items. >> reporter: more than 900 laptops were left behind last year. and then there are the things that leave you scratching your head. a single shoe? a wheelchair? even fully packed carry-on cases. lenard davis thinks he knows what's going on. >> they probably want x amount of fee to check the bag. hey, it's easier to leave it at the checkpoint and then when i return back, i can claim my

bag. >> reporter: davis' company stores the nearly 20,000 pieces that come through the airport's lost and found each year. about 20% are never claimed and are sold at auction but some travelers lose things that cannot be ignored like the little old lady who called from idaho. >> said my husband left his denture at the checkpoint and he need to eat and i need to get them fedexed to me right away. >> reporter: this is just the stuff found at security checkpoints. the items left at baggage claim are held by the individual airlines. so if you are missing something, call them -- that is, if you still have your cell phone. at sfo, john ramos, kpix 5. >> just kind of making sure -- yeah, they're still there. the tsa has a website listing lost and found contacts at airports across the country. find the link on our website, kpix.com. click "links and numbers." well, one in four recalled cars never get the needed fix. why? because car owners don't know about the recall.

>> on the consumerwatch, julie watts shows us a new way to find out if your car is on the recall list. >> reporter: do you know if your car has been recalled? >> no. >> no. >> reporter: well, considering about one out of every five cars in the u.s. has been recalled, more cars this year than ever before, odds are you're driving one or driving alongside one. would you like us to check for you? >> yes, please. >> okay. >> reporter: and checking for recalls is now much easier thanks to nhtsa's new database of recalled cars. enter your v.i.n. number and it shows if you have outstanding recalls. but there is a fear that it may be on the consumer to find out rather than dealers. >> we are concerned that dealers say now anyone can access this so it's up to you to find out. >> reporter: car safety advocates like rosemary shea han point out the database is

only accessible in english only online limiting access to many. >> they are the professionals. dealers should not be selling recalled used cars. >> reporter: but unlike other consumer products that can't be sold once recalled there is no law preventing used car dealers from selling you a recalled car. >> scary if you have a child. >> reporter: in spite of claims like certified or 125-point inspection, dealers don't have to tell you if your new used car has a safety defect. >> it's just shocking! >> reporter: not so shocking, two of the five-car owners we spoke with had recalls saying that the new database will be part of their used car purchase. >> i'll check it. >> reporter: you can find this information on the manufacturer website. they are required to update it every 30 days and they are required to make the fix for 10 years. only 70% of recalled cars ever get repaired. >> one in five, not one in

four. >> one in five. >> still, 20%. >> that's huge. >> reporter: a lot of cars. and, you know, really more concerning is they don't get repaired and you don't know if they have been fixed before you buy a used car. >> dangerous. okay. thanks. santa clara county supervisor dave cortes wants to make water cuts mandatory. the san jose mayoral candidate wants all county departments to reduce their water use by 25%. at a meeting of county land use housing environment and transportation, supervisors discussed the water reduction proposal. cortes says he knows there will be exceptions. >> there will be some areas in the county where it's hard to achieve a 25% goal, for example the emergency room at the hospital. we'll take that into account. >> the supervisors say landscape watering shouldn't be a priority. he wants the county to sell an example for residents. giants just made baseball history. they got a rare second chance to, uhm, finish a game that started on tuesday. the game was called after a

four-hour rain delay with the cubs winning 2-0 in the 5th inning but the giants appealed to major league baseball officials who decided the game should be resumed because the tarp was not properly handled. it's baseball's first successful protest since 1986. ironically, rain also delayed today's game a couple of hours. fortunately, the giants just lost -- unfortunately, the giants just lost 2-1. the newest laker point guard keeps on having the summer of his dreams. basketball star jeremy lin had a wax statue in the madam toussaud museum today. he signed with the rivals for $25 million this summer. he is the first chinese- american to play in the nba. >> weird to see yourself in wax. paul deanno is out and about. he is at the summer street fair in hayward. the last one in before the end of summer. >> reporter: we are. it certainly feels like summer.

take two or three steps forward. what's going to happen is an area of low pressure is going to pass by to the north up in the pacific northwest. we will not tap into the rainfall. but we will tap into a stronger onshore flow. so for tomorrow, temperatures will remain near or below average. but then we'll start to see a warmup coming up over the weekend. and once that happens, we'll really jack the temperatures up above normal by the middle of next week. so low clouds moving inland again tonight. it will be a cloudy start to your friday. temperatures will dip a little bit tomorrow compared to today but the weekend is looking great to get outside. and it will be a little warmer especially coming up on sunday. your high temperatures tomorrow, still the mid- to upper 60s for san francisco with some afternoon sunshine. santa rosa another nice day for you high of 83. fremont hayward mid- to upper 70s great stuff. fairfield 83. redwood city 77. san jose 81. your extended forecast:

the oscar winner was cremated and his ashes spre over the bay... the day aft williams took his life in h robin williams's remains have been scattered over the san francisco bay. he was cremated and ashes spread over the bay the day after he killed himself in his tiburon home. the actor's wife revealed the actor was suffering from early stages of parkinson's. no word yet on any kind of public memorial service. deputies thought cell phone selfies were pictures of the suspects they were looking for. turns out they were wrong when their would be thieves showed up at the police station with an explanation. santa clarita investigators thought 21-year-old larry beltran was their man after his selfies were uploaded to an icloud storage account of a stolen phone. beltran went into the sheriff's station to clear his name. he said he took those pictures on a phone that his aunt bought at a swap meet. >> i'm not looking for any kind of apology. the cops are doing their jobs. i would be feeling the same way. >> detectives are still calling beltran a person of interest as

their investigation continues. unclear if or when he is going to be off the hook. another unfortunate victim of the drought, honey production. california is one of the country's largest suppliers. but the lack of rain has ravage the plants honeybees need and farmers are planting fewer crops where they can forage. all this is on top of a worldwide shortage that has pushed prices to record highs. a movie theater in lodi reopened today after a bedbug infestation forced it to close for a few days. last friday two girls who went to the theater woke up covered in those painful bedbug bites. the pests were found in the theater seats! the theater closed to exterminate the bugs and people turned up for a matinee movie showing support for the theater. it's all right. i'll do it. [ laughter ] >> but they said it's okay to re-open so hopefully it is. >> magic in the moonlight. hopefully there will be magic in the extermination of the bedbugs. >> theater management said they
